Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that provides financial support to those in the construction trade who endured life-altering injuries. Every year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, raised in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil experienced a severe stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the use of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg seriously impaired, causing foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors were concerned that he would eventually be restricted to a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, causing financial stress on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila would not be able to afford the apparatus in addition to the intensive rehab that would be needed so he could figure out how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
