How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a prominent duty as your furnace prepares to warm your home.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and creates heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Malfunctions
When your pressure switch isn’t functioning promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking multiple times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will tell you something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
