When Should You Repair Your Air Conditioner and When Should You Replace It
Your air conditioning system is plugging away through another Columbus summer and all of sudden your cold air stops blasting. You call an air conditioner professional to come to your home and take a look and the next thing you know you’re going to have to pay a chuck of change for the repair. So at what point should you call it a day and just replace your current air conditioning equipment?
Age
Obviously the older the system the more it’s likely to breakdown and lose efficiency. Air conditioning systems over eight years old are actually much less efficient than the new energy-efficient systems available today. But if your system is more than 15 years old, you are likely to put in more money over time to keep it operating than if you just invested in a new, energy-efficient air conditioning system.
Money
To continue with the theme above, eventually it’s going to cost more to invest in new parts and repair issues than it would to just buy a new AC system. Another factor to note is R-22, the usual refrigerant for old A/C equipment, is being withdrawn from the market for the protection of the environment. If your air conditioner was produced before 2010, you will most likely see a jump in the fee for your refrigerant until you replace your system.
Efficiency
Engineering is always advancing and with that comes more energy-efficient A/C systems. New equipment tends to cost less to operate because they can cool the home more efficiently, saving you money on your utility bills – and who doesn’t want that?
